Painting Competitions

Our miniature gaming community at Scalliwag Toys is filled with talented folks who spend a lot of time and energy painting their minis. This includes Warhammer, Dungeons & Dragons, and the broader miniature world. We host a few different painting or other DIY-style competitions throughout the year to give these creative folks a chance to show off their skills and win some fun prizes. On this page you will find details about current or upcoming competitions as well as those we've had in the past.

APRIL 1 - APRIL 30, 2021

It's that time again for our annual miniature painting competition! For the month of April, we will be tasking our miniature painting community to show us their skills. However, to switch things up a bit, we're calling this year's event our "Golden Squad" competition, because we want you to paint AND share your #SquadStory with us, as we are including a storytelling component.

GOLDEN SQUAD COMPETITION DETAILS & INSTRUCTIONS

To participate in this year's Golden Squad Competition, you still only need to paint a single miniature. This can be from any miniature product line, and you can paint something you already own, or buy a new one from us and receive a 10% discount on that mini. What makes this year's contest a bit different, is that we also want you to tell us a story about this mini and their "squad".

With your Squad Stories, we want you to be imaginative and bring your figure and their core group to life through storytelling. Are they a band of adventurers who met each other and decided to team up to raid a dragon's hoard? Or maybe they are a tight-knit band of brothers who have been through hell and back in honour of the Emperor? Maybe they are a team of orcs that have trained all year and will do whatever it takes to win this season of BloodBowl? Anything goes, as long as it is in a narrative form (i.e. no point form lists). Tell us a story, be it a third-person description of how they met, a tale of one of their adventures, or perhaps a journal entry from one of the squad members themselves. Your story should be between 250-1000 words total. *Originality is key here - anyone found to be plagiarizing their story from an existing source, such as a D&D manual or a codex/battletome will be disqualified. If you are inspired by a certain source material or setting, that is fine (please let us know), but your squad story must be your own.

Each entrant will be judged on a combination of their demonstrated painting skills and creativity with the mini they submit, as well as the quality and originality of their storytelling. This has the potential to level the playing field for those who might not be confident in their painting skills just yet - a good story and an ok paint job still has a chance of winning!

Winners will be chosen by a panel of judges that includes Stacey and Stuart, as well as the 2020 Golden Squat Competition first place winner, Matthew Dey. Prizing will be awarded to the judges' choices for the top 3 entrants. Winners will be announced over social media and contacted in early May.

ENTERING THE COMPETITION - NO FEE REQUIRED
To enter the competition, participants must register by submitting their name and contact information, as well as a "before" photo of the miniature they will be painting. This can be done digitally via email or Facebook Messenger, or can be done in-person at the store by showing us the unpainted mini itself. We recommend that participants do this by Saturday, April 17 at the latest. All final submissions for the competition must be dropped off at the store by 6pm Friday April 30. Squad Stories can be submitted online or printed out and handed in along with the painted mini.

KIDS COLOURING CONTEST
This year we are also happy to offer a contest for our younger community members in the age 12 and under group. Kids can colour/design their own Space Marine Heraldry and make their own squad too! The winner of the kids competition will receive a $10 gift certificate for the store. Colouring sheets can be picked up from the store, or requested from us online if you would like to print them yourself at home. All entries must be submitted by 6pm Friday April 30, maximum 2 entries per participant.
