The impulse to care for and look after another creature is very strong, and for thousands of years parents have fashioned dolls for their children to snuggle and to love.  Dolls as playthings have been dated by archaeologists to as long as 5000 years ago.  Today's dolls are safe and cuddly, able to withstand a great deal of play (many are even machine-washable).
